Thai food varies from one restaurant or chef to another, but there are some basic Thai dishes that every chef will know how to make to perfection with one recipe or another. The exact ingredients and flavors will vary, but anyone selling Thai food should be able to make you some of these basic, yet extraordinary tasting, dishes.
#1: Fried Rice
Most Thai dishes can be eaten with rice or on their own. Thailand people will often eat their meals with plain white rice, but most restaurants and chefs serving people outside of Thailand will serve a variety of fried rice favorites. Thai rice has some different flavors from the fried rice you may already enjoy from Chinese restaurants.
For instance, pineapple fried rice is a popular choice of people in and outside of Thailand. The flavor of this fried rice has a delicate sweetness that goes well with a wide variety of Thai dishes.
Many people like eating fried rice on its own as a meal, but combine a little with another Thai dish and you will experience out-of-this-world taste.
#2: Stir Fried Chicken or Beef
Stir fry is one of the best Thai meals if you want something light and delicious that still fills you up. Thai stir fries tend to be on the spicy side and the recipes typically include a variety of vegetables as well as nuts such as cashews. It is delicious with fried rice or even just plain steamed rice if you don’t want to overload the flavors.
You may also be able to find stir fried Tofu or similar dishes available from some Thai chefs. This is a great option for vegetarians or those just trying to cut back on their meat consumption for health or weight loss.
#3: Fried Spring Rolls
Spring rolls are similar to egg rolls except they are smaller and are filled with a vegetable mix. There is no meat involved with spring rolls. They are delicate and light, but taste delicious when dipped in sweet and sour sauce.
Most people consume spring rolls as appetizers, but they are still one of the most popular Thai foods being served around the world today. You could also use them as snacks if you have leftovers after a Thai meal.
#4: Tom Kha Chicken or Seafood Soup
What makes these soups authentically Thai is the use of coconut milk. The chicken version is often referred to as Tom Kha Kai and this is the version that many chefs serve. Yet, the soup is equally delicious when seafood is used instead of chicken.
Typically, this soup will incorporate a variety of spices which are all tamed by the coconut milk. The result is flavorful soup that tastes authentically Thai and very different from other chicken soups.
#5: Pad Thai
Pad Thai is one of the most authentic Thai dishes you will find anywhere today. It has a long history in Thailand and has quite a following around the world today as well. Basically, these dishes are made from fried noodles. You will find different varieties out there and they can use chicken, beef, or seafood. You may even find a tofu recipe available if you prefer your meals do not contain meat.
Fried noodles are one of the staples of Thai food and are something everyone should try at least once in their lifetime!
